Looking Back…….

Hmm, I have two before homeschooling parts to my life. The first was exactly 18 years ago. My daughters, Michelle Marie and Renee were in public schools, I had 2 little boys and a third on the way. My daughter Renee was not doing well in school, the teacher she had was very rigid and not very emphathetic and she was and still is my very sensitive daughter. So after 3 quarters of being ‘Mommy glue”, I pulled her from school to finish out the year at home. That fall had me homeschooling both girls and dong some preschool stuff with Darius, who was 4 turning 5.

Life was a bit more complicated after starting homeschooling, it seemed we were always busy doing something, going somewhere, trying to give the girls a bit of ‘friend time’ The pluses were many, I had time to teach them how to do things they probably wouldn’t have learned, like how to sew, knit, cross stitch, bake, menu plan. All those ‘life lessons’ . Things I missed~ free time for myself. I didn’t really ever get a break for me. Things, I gained time to bond with my daughters as they got older. One day years ago, my daughter told me that she was glad that I had taught her so many things about keeping a home, she got pregnant at a mere 17 and really needed that baby experience that I had given her.

Fast forward to the year 2000, I had divorced and remarried, had another son and was expecting another baby (another boy) Noah was 3 and we had heard about Sonlight, while I was pregnant with Noah no less. I truly feel that the Lord led us to Sonlight all those years ago. It was before I even knew I was pregnant with Noah. Things gained? Time with my children, Noah and Adrien are very close and I’m thinking that all 4 of the little ones will be close as they grow older and become wiser. Things missed? Time……a clean home, things that will come after they are grown and moved out. Things that on a scale of importance, are at the bottom rung.

In spite of the challenges of homeschooling while attending college classes, being active in my church. I love it and wouldn’t give up a second of it for a clean house and time to myself. My time with my children is precious to me and will be gone long before I’m ready to relinquish it.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing your two before homeschooling posts! I can really identify with this:

I didn’t really ever get a break for me.

My husband asks why it is that I always want to take a bath when he is home during the day. (He works for the railroad so it is just me and the kids most days.)

    He just doesn’t quite understand…
